A Great Lactation Smoothie (probably)

Motherhood is about making it up as you go along, I assume. I’ve applied the same philosophy to my new obsession with cooking/baking/smoothie-making.

I therefore present to you my recipe for Mama Raven’s Lactation Smoothie:


  • 1 banana
  • 1/2 cup of vanilla yogurt
  • 1/2 cup of oats
  • 1/2 cup of peanut butter
  • 1 tbsp of sugar
  • a pinch of Brewer’s Yeast
  • a pinch of flaxseed
  • ice! exclamation point!


  1. Thrash ingredients together in large garbage bag while hula hooping.
  2. Just kidding. Mix it all in a blender.
  3. Enjoy!

What I love about this smoothie, besides that it’s delicious, is that it’s incredibly nutritious. I like to add flaxseed to everything because it’s rich in fiber and omega-3 fatty acids, which are great for brain development. Oats and brewer’s yeast help produce breastmilk, but the former also makes this a sufficient breakfast. Last, peanut butter is God’s gift to man (er, George Washington Carver’s gift to man?), and it’s also packed with protein.
